FIRST PLACE
Buffalo Gap: A Gateway to the Texas Frontier
Jason Hutt, Tuscola, TX

The "gap" in the Callahan Divide just south of present-day Abilene, TX became a favorite passage for the thousands of buffalo that roamed throughout the Great Plains. Buffalo Gap, as it later became known, soon symbolized life on the frontier as many diverse cultures were drawn to the bountiful hunting lands ultimately putting them on a collision course that helped to define the American West. Through this program, students will be able to relive the rich culture, harrowing danger, and captivating folklore of the Texas frontier.

Meet the Animals

Join the Kingwood Park High School (Texas) Agriculture students as they explore different species and breeds of animals and what it takes to raise them, properties and characteristics of animals, how animals change over time, and the basic needs of the animals. Your class will get an up-close look at several breeds of animals and be able to ask lots of questions.

Memphis Panda Project

Take a look through the eyes of a panda living at the Memphis Zoo. During this exciting program you will learn about the life cycle, eating habits, and the living conditions of pandas in captivity. Witness their impact on the local economy, their atmosphere, and the force of human beings on their survival. Listen to the facts, myths, and misconceptions about panda bears, and gain enlightening information on their lives from behind the scenes.

The Day After Tomorrow
Geraldine Mellon & Roisin Rice, Derry City, Northern Ireland, UK

In the Gaelic language Doire translated as Derry means the "place of the Oak Tree". Our city was founded on ancient woodland owned by the famous Celtic Warrior Chieftain Calgach and our school is situated close to Creggan Country Park. These woodlands once covered the entire island of Ireland but have been reduced to 4% in the whole county. We'll investigate the decline of the Irish Hare, which is close to extinction, and explore why we must all do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint here in Ireland and save not only our city but our planet for future generations.

Cardiff Castle: Discover 2000 Years of History

During 2000 years of history, the Cardiff Castle in Wales, UK has been a Roman Garrison, a Norman stronghold and in Victorian times was transformed into a gothic fairytale fantasy. Just imagine taking a virtual tour of the castle and stepping back in time with our students from the United Kingdom. Pull up the drawbridge and take your post in the castle tower to protect it from Celtic warriors.

FIRST PLACE
Exploring Hawaii's Powerful Resources

Everyone is exploring renewable resources and Hawaii is too. What resources are on the islands and how are they being used? Solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, ocean thermal and hydropower energy will be included as we explore the future of energy and the benefits for the 'aina' (which means "land" in Hawaiian).

Meet the Real Martha Washington
Tammy Parks, Howe, OK

Broadcast Journalism students from Howe Public Schools will lead students on journey back in time to meet the real Martha Washington. You are invited along for this special program in partnership with the George Washington Global Teaching Ambassador, Jan McClaren, and Mount Vernon's very own historical interpreter, Mary Wiseman. Meet the young, widowed Martha whose husband died of an illness, leaving Martha with two young children to raise. And meet the courageous Valley Forge Martha who risked her own life by assuming the public role as a symbol of the patriot cause and also Martha Washington, the very First Lady of our country.

Hawaii Under Silent Siege

In our videoconference, we'll cover some of the species that live in Hawaii and look at the difference between 'alien' and 'invasive' species. Through interviews with staff from the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium we explore how many of these species arrived and what people are doing to save our native species and improve Hawaii's environment. Join us for this interactive presentation looking at the plants and animals of our islands.

The Legend of Bass Reeves
Tammy Parks, Howe, OK

"No writer could invent a more amazing, Western frontier character than Bass Reeves." In honor of the 100th anniversary of his death and his importance to American history, Howe Middle School Broadcast Journalism students invite you to participate in this special program about "one of the bravest men this country has ever known." Reeves became the first African-American to be inducted into the Great Westerners Hall of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Explore his amazing life and story.

SECOND PLACE
It's a HORSE of a Different Kind

"It's a HORSE of a Different Kind" will take you from the origins of the horse to current day uses. We hope to enlighten our viewers with unique information about horses. We will even talk about the miniature horse. So come ride a horse with us down the trail knowledge.

THIRD PLACE
Merkel, TX- Life in Small Town, USA
Hilary Miller, Merkel, TX

Take a trip with us back to the 1800's when settlers came to the little village of Merkel, a shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railroad. As we explore the evolution of a small West Texas town, we will see that the more things change, the more they remain the same. As areas are more commercialized, Merkel has one of the few remaining working grain elevators in the area that still depend on the railroad today. We will take a fieldtrip to the local Area Historical Museum with exhibits including Pioneer Days, Farm and Ranch, Indians and a Windmill.
