Tips for Site Coordinators – October 2009

Dear Site Coordinator,
Earlier this month I sent an email through the CILC Videoconferencing Site Coordinators NING asking members to share a BEST experience or practice related to videoconferencing.

I would like to thank Linda and Erica for the wonderful responses you see below!

We have redesigned e-Note this year to make it quicker to read and easier to share.
For the November Issue, I am looking for a 2-3 sentence paragraph that describes an event that has made you thankful for videoconferencing. As always, please include your job title, organization, and a jpeg of yourself.

Hope you enjoy!
Sincerely,
Dawn

Job Title: Director of Distance Learning
Organization: St.Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School

Best Practice in Videoconferencing
The Scholastic Magazine (weekly) highlights current events. Using this tool, my two schools and a school in Louisiana are meeting to discuss, debate and collaborate about the current events they read.

Best Experience in Videoconferencing
A 5th grader in Las Vegas has immune deficiency disease and is home schooled by her mom. Since she needed help in math, our 5th grade math class connects with her several days a week. It is making a tremendous difference for this little girl!

Job Title: Distance Learning Coordinator
Organization: The Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo

Best Practices in Videoconferencing
We use live video cameras in our Madagascar exhibit to teach students about lemurs. The cameras I control remotely with a joystick from my studio allow students to observe the lemurs more closely than they would be able to if they actually came to the zoo. We zoom in close enough to inspect the lemurs' fingernails and sometimes we even watch ants march up and down the spiny plants in the exhibit!
